Drains

"This Drains is Just for Rain"

You will notice that some drains have been stencilled with the words "The drain is just for rain".

This is part of a campaign supported by Gloucester Shire Council, in partnership with the NSW Environmental Protection Authority, to reduce pollutants to drains, and consequently our water ways.

Litter, surplus garden fertilisers and pesticides, grease and oils, cigarette butts, sediments and nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus are often washed down drains, causing stormwater pollution.

Using drains as a litter bin is dangerous to the environment. What goes down the drain can be toxic for wildlife and make swimming or fishing unpleasant or even unhealthly.

Each resident can contribute to ensuring healthly waterways and environment in the area in which they live.

What can you do to reduce stormwater pollution?

  • Don't put rubbish and pollution down the drain, including leaves and grass clippings and pet droppings
  • Wash your car on the grass or over gravel, not on the street
  • Keep your driveways and gutters clean, even clear leaves and grass clippings (sweep them up and put them in your compost bin)
  • Stop chemicals from leaking into drains and gutters. Ensure chemicals are stored properly and safely, and clean up spills quickly

Council encourages all residents to become invloved and ensure the only water entering drains is free from pollutants.

    Urban Water Cycle Management Toolkit

This project designed and developed a comprehensive and innovative toolkit of resources (in CD and web-based access format) to build the capacity of NSW Councils to embrace and pursue innovation in sustainable stormwater management and urban water cycle practices. The toolkit is available by clicking on this link www.urbanwater.info.

The website provides an excellent resource for a wide range of disciplines in Council, including engineers, planners, environmental managers, catchment managers, asset managers and educators. A capacity building DVD and video can be ordered via the website and is designed to assist staff in introducing innovation and sustainable solutions to water management issues in their LGAs. The toolkit was launched in mid 2005.
