Environmental Health & Building Surveying - Published: 10 Jul 2007

Environmental Health Officers have the opportunity to work across a full range of public and environmental health issues:

■ Water (drinking, recreational, sewage and water reuse)

■ Air Quality (indoor and outdoor)

■ Food (safe preparation and sale of food)

■ Contaminated land (land remediation)

■ Waste management (solid and liquid)

■ Communicable diseases (vector, blood borne, environmental)

■ Environment protection (pollution, noise)

■ Health protection (education, tobacco control)

The role and spread of duties can vary enormously but the primary focus will generally be on regulatory compliance. Environmental Health Officers may also identify and respond to other health issues such as social and public health planning and ‘healthy by design’ principles, to promote sustainable and healthy lifestyles. They may also be involved in health promotion activities in a range of areas, including sun protection, nutrition and physical activity. For further information view the factsheet below.
