Mayoral Message

We live in a beautiful rural environment and enjoy life within a vibrant, caring and progressive community. Council extends a warm and sincere thankyou to those who volunteer for committees and Council functions. Your time, support and dedication are invaluable to the Council and community at large.

Major achievements and issues include revising the Local Environment Plan (LEP), which involved a strong community consultation process. The future development of the Shire needs to reflect community expectations. Compiling the Draft Plan has been a tremendous effort by Council’s planning staff.

Of major importance are our water and sewerage schemes, with vital infrastructure upgrades involving considerable costs. We need continuing community consultation regarding acceptable and affordable solutions.Other highlights are the Gloucester River Bridge replacement and near completion of the Bucketts Way Upgrade Program.

Council remains a strong partner in regional resource sharing with the Mid North Coast Strategic Alliance and the Hunter Councils Group.

Climate change is a major issue within the Local Government and Shires Association, and Council continues to progress environmental initiatives. The amazing energy of this community brought the Hydrotherapy Pool project to fruition, with combined funding from Gloucester RSL Sub Branch, local residents, the Federal Government and Council.

Whilst acknowledging the local economic benefits of mining, growing community concern exists regarding the issues of mining expansion in Gloucester Shire and exploration licences within our State Conservation Areas.  Balanced and robust debate is vital in a healthy democracy.  Delivering quality services, strong economic, environmental and social benefits and ensuring Gloucester Shire is THE place to live, work and visit continues to be an exciting challenge.

It is a privilege to work with such a professional team of dedicated people employed throughout Gloucester Shire Council and fellow Councillors. I would like to pay a resounding tribute to Cr Barry Ryan and his enormous contribution to Local Government and the community. To those who lay the foundations for the path we can all walk on……..thank you.

In special memory of former Councillors Rodney Redman and Clem Martin, it was an honour to know and work with such dedicated Councillors and gentlemen.  Their wisdom and gentle humour will be sorely missed.

Cr. Julie  Lyford.       Mayor       31 October 2007
